CLUB RULES
GMMA Karate allows all to learn the art of self-defence together in a safe and supportive environment. We have a strong emphasis on respect and compassion towards everyone, not only within our dojo, but within the communities that surround.
Respect
We apply the Japanese principal of RESPECT. Which means that Budo (Martial Arts), starts with respect and ends with respect. Everything in between is also respect.
That is: respect for one’s self, one’s teachers, fellow students, club property, fellow student’s property, etc. But it doesn’t stop there, it also transforms into daily life with; respect for work colleagues, teachers, bosses, parents, other family members, the environment of all living things etc.
In other words – treat other’s as you would like to be treated and respected yourself. Which needless to say involves a “common sense” approach to training. We do not do anything that will endanger anybody, particularly during sparring or weaponry training.
We are not a strict Club, some would say not a traditional club, as we do not impose any Strict Discipline on Students as some more Traditional Clubs and Instructors do.
However, we do expect higher grades to “Lead by Example” and teach the remainder of the Student Body the “Martial Art Way”. An old Teaching is that: your “cup is never half full” but “half empty”. So, be open to change and be open to learning.

Dojo Etiquette
Bowing
Karate is a journey that builds character within each and every student, through discipline of the body, and clarity and purity of the mind.
All of our students who learn our style of mixed martial art are required to bow before entering and exiting the mat training area. They must also bow towards a training partner before and after an exercise is undertaken, this is to show respect.
Dojo
At Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts, we provide a safe, well matted training area for our students and all the necessary sparring equipment needed to undertake any exercises we teach.
We do require our members to have all the necessary protective gear, including gloves, shin guards and a mouthguard, to help assist in their safety.
To ensure a safe environment is met, students are required to correctly wear and train in a clean Gi (Uniform), have trimmed fingers and toe nails, and remove all jewellery and watches.
All equipment that is used by our students is to be placed back where they received it from, this is again instilling the value of respect.
Any student caught using their skills outside our dojo irresponsibly will be expelled. Our emphasis is on Respect, Compassion and Honour. We do not condone or tolerate any form of violence.
