What Style of Karate is the GMMA Style?

Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts is based off of the traditional teachings of a Go-Ju Style, but as our name suggests, we are a mixed martial art. Our approach incorporates multiple art forms to give a greater variety of self-defence applications and the ability to diversify classes. We integrate extensive knowledge from Boxing, Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu and some forms of weaponry.

Do Classes Run All Year Round?

  • All Adult Classes (Cardio, Boxing & Senior Karate), run all year around, except for major public holidays or unless specified to our members via email or our social media platforms.
  • Our Beginners and Junior Classes follow each school term, commencing and ending on the same dates.

How do I Sign-Up for the “First 3x Lessons Free” Trial?

GMMA offers all our new customers, 3x Trial Lessons, Free of Charge. This gives everyone a chance to delve into and experience how our classes are structured and to ask further questions in person. To sign up, simply click one of the corresponding website buttons or complete the enquiry form on the “Free Trial” page.

What Will I Learn in My First Lesson?

All of our classes start with the Basic Fundamentals of Martial Arts, with an emphasis on basic technique and application, this being age and class dependent instruction. Students will be introduced and informed on how to safely approach opponents in a strong stance and apply the basic karate punches, blocks and kicks into our padded equipment.

What is the Best Age to Learn Karate?

We generally advise that your child starts around the same time they start school (age 5yrs). Kids can get the most out of classes because they are able to learn and apply concepts such as: Telling left from right. Understanding empathy and how their behaviour affects others.

Beginner Classes are on a Tuesday and Thursday night from 5.00pm-5:50pm. This class has smaller numbers and is focused particularly on engaging students in the basic fundamentals of karate.

For example: basic coordinated techniques like stances, blocks and strikes.

What is the Best Age for Which GMMA Class?

We Recommend:

  • 5-8yrs: Our Beginners Class as the Best starting point.
  • 8-13yrs: Our Junior Classes for further development.
  • 13+yrs: Our Senior, Cardio and Boxing Classes.
(These classes all have more advanced applications and are better suited to the older demographics).

Can you Start Learning Karate at Any Age?

You are never too old for karate lessons. There is no age limit, and there is actually very little physical restriction as well. In fact, karate lessons can actually help you improve and overcome some perceived boundaries set by either your age or your physical state.

Is there an Adult Beginners Class Available?

We don’t have a specific Beginners Class for Adults. We believe in running our adults’ class under one structure. This unifies everyone together in understanding not only the basics of Karate, but also for anyone new to see what they can achieve as they develop on their journey.

Do I need any Special Clothes for a Karate Class?

The Karate Uniform is called a Gi (pronounced ghee).

The gi is made from cotton of varying thicknesses and is durable enough to withstand grappling. The pants of the gi normally have an elasticated waist, making it easy for kids to wear but a traditional gi will have the old-style drawstring closure. We practice our martial arts barefoot, so no footwear required, however a mouthguard is required for personal safety.

On your first day of class, all that is required is either sweatpants or shorts and a T-shirt. Karate uniforms – Gi, can be purchased from GMMA in due course. Discuss further with one of our instructors.

How Often does Grading to the next Belt Level Occur?

GMMA generally holds gradings for eligible students once every school term. Depending on yourself or your child’s attendance, the students eligible for gradings are informed 2 weeks prior to the grading date. Generally, when first beginning, gradings seem very regular as we expect only the basic techniques and fundamentals to be displayed. As a student moves up in their rankings, the gradings become more spread out and the level of technique and what we expect as a good standard of syllabus is thoroughly looked at by our head instructors

What Gear do I need for A Cardio/Boxing Class?

We don’t expect anyone doing their trial lessons to have their own gear upfront. All that is needed is comfortable fitness clothing and a drink bottle when first trying out lessons. Footwear is not required as all of our classes are undertaken on our soft foam dojo training area. Training equipment is supplied although in due course you may wish to purchase your own gloves, body protection and head gear.

Can I Train if I have an Existing Injury or Health Problem?

Private Lessons are available upon request. Our One-on-One and small group personal training sessions offer a more personalised and tailored fitness experience. Sessions can either be 30min or 60min in duration. Speak to one of our instructors to learn more.

  • a monthly payment option for our Adult classes (Cardio, Boxing & Senior Karate).

We have a state-of-the-art payment and processing systems in place and our members are able to pay by cash or card. Before each class, all of our members with selected passes are able to check themselves in via an electronic tablet prior to entering onto the training area.

Do I have to Sign a Contract?
