About the Class

The Gisborne Mixed Martial Arts Syllabus consists of an amalgamation of different styles of Martial Arts stemming from a common lineage of traditional Go-Ju Style Karate and Ju-Jitsu, with the added inclusion of Kickboxing and Boxing.

Karate is predominantly “Power” or “Strength” and “Focus” oriented. Ju-Jitsu literally means the “Gentle Art” and is fundamentally concerned with using minimal force and re-directing the opponents force to your advantage. It is also “Weaponry” based. Kickboxing and Boxing fundamentals help to not only improve fitness but also give a diverse method of self-defence.

How are different Martial Art forms taught in one class? The basis is that once the Student realises the differences, this can then become a distinct advantage when faced with a more powerful Aggressor in a Self defence situation. In fact, all disciplines complement each other very well.

Tournaments

We are constantly taking advantage of any tournaments that become available to us outside of the Dojo. In the past we have had students undertake different tournaments and successfully win first and second in both Kata and sparring. We’ve even had students achieve greater success and have had them compete in Japan, representing Australia.

When Tournaments aren’t running outside of the Dojo, we try to give our students the opportunity of undertaking an in house style tournament. This gives students a chance to improve their technique and confidence under tournament conditions.

Through giving our students the opportunity to partake in such challenges, has shown time and time again how each student’s ability levels can be tested, giving them the chance to step up and prove to themselves that they can achieve anything they put their mind too. No matter the outcome, our supportive community of instructors and students always have each other’s back for support.
